Continuing its efforts to help lower the number of traffic fatalities and injuries that occur each year on U.S. roads, Toyota has announced that it will build a new Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC) at its technical facility in Ann Arbor, Mich. Initially, the Center will gear its efforts to reducing driver distractions and protecting “the most vulnerable traffic populations”: Children, teens and seniors, who together represent some 30 percent of all traffic deaths in the America.

“Toyota’s new safety research center will work with leading North American universities and other partners on safety projects that benefit the entire industry,” said Akio Toyoda, president of the Toyota Motor Corporation. “Our investment will support collaborative research aiming to reduce driver distraction and increase the safety of vehicles, drivers, passengers and pedestrians.”

As a mark of that collaboration, Toyota also has announced it would commit $50 million to the effort during the next five years and named its three charter partners in the CSRC:

The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute will lead a multidisciplinary project to assess the possible benefits of advanced safety systems by leveraging its expertise in driver behavior, crash analysis and driver modeling.

Virginia Tech will be collaborating with Toyota on research into the effectiveness of an electronic coaching and monitoring system for newly licensed teenage drivers to help reduce unsafe driving behaviors.

With The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Research Institute, Toyota is partnering in a pilot study to develop the country’s first publicly available national crash surveillance system focused on child vehicle occupants.

“Toyota has always tried to take a comprehensive approach to creating a safe, sustainable automotive society through advanced vehicle safety technology, intelligent transport systems and traffic safety education,” said Chuck Gulash, who will head up the CSRC for Toyota. “We have a long history of working closely with North American partners to achieve our safety objectives, and our new collaborative research initiative will build on this tradition. We intend to publish as much of the research as possible so that it is available to federal agencies, the industry and academia.”

The Only Minivan On The 2011 IIHS Top Safety Pick List: Toyota Sienna

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

2011 Toyota Sienna imageWith minivans once again growing in popularity, there are a lot of new choices on the market today—but only one earned a place among the 2011 Top Safety Picks chosen by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS): That was the all-new Toyota Sienna. Only vehicles that offer electronic stability control and score the highest possible marks in the IIHS’ front, side, rear and rollover crash evaluations earn the award, so this is no small honor for Toyota’s “Swagger Wagon.”

But it is further evidence of Toyota’s renewed dedication to customer safety, which also includes making the company’s Star Safety System a standard feature on the Sienna. This comprehensive suite of safety technologies includes anti-lock brakes, brake-force distribution, brake assist, vehicle stability control and traction control. Seven airbags are standard as well, ranging from dual-stage front and seat-mounted airbags for the front seats to a new driver’s-side knee airbag and side-curtain airbags that extend the length of the cabin to offer protection to passengers in all rows.

The 2011 Sienna stands apart from the crowd for other reasons, too. Completely redesigned for the new model year, Toyota’s minivan offers a choice of both four- and six-cylinder engines, front- or all-wheel drive, a sporty SE model that delivers a surprisingly dynamic driving experience, aggressive sheet metal, a roomier and more versatile interior than the 2010 model, and much more. In fact, thanks to these kinds of advantages, sales of the Sienna were up nearly 20 percent through November of this year.

Impressively, seven other Toyota products also were named to the 2011 list of IIHS Top Safety Picks:

“Toyota is pleased to have received eight IIHS Top Safety Picks for 2011, which we believe is reflective of our ongoing commitment to developing safe and reliable vehicles for our customers,” said a company representative.

Report: Driver Error Caused Sudden Acceleration

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011
By: Toyota In The News

Toyota is a name that you’ve certainly heard in the news over the past year thanks to endless counts of people coming forward to report issues with their Toyota Vehicles. Last year, the recalls were the hot topic- accidents and reports of sudden acceleration on certain Toyota models had consumers in an uproar.

On Tuesday, February 8th, there was a report released by NHTSA-NASA on the electronic throttle system that contained the results of an extensive 10 month study they conducted.

It seems the incidents were caused by “user error”, the pedal sticking or the floor mat bunching up. Toyota has released an official statement in regards to this report, saying that they welcome the findings and appreciate the thoroughness of the review.

So what will this do for the reputation? It’s already been starting to restore the positive brand image for Toyota that once was — with the stock price rising and positive sentiment across social media channels and automotive sites.

For more information on the findings of the report, please check out the official NHTSA-NASA study of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles.

Toyota Launches New Quality Initiatives

Friday, November 26th, 2010
by Toyota In The News

Building on recent efforts that have pushed down customer concerns about acceleration some 80 percent since April and have implemented recall solutions on 5 million vehicles, Toyota has now announced a wide range of further quality initiatives geared to further enhancing the company’s resurgent reputation as an industry leader.

Notable among Toyota’s new and ongoing quality efforts is the company’s decision to install its Smart Stop technology on all new vehicles sold in the U.S. Under certain driving conditions, this feature provides brake-override functionality that automatically reduces engine power when a vehicle’s brake and accelerator pedals are pressed at the same time. Smart Stop is currently standard on 84 percent of all Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles on sale in this country, including all Toyota and Lexus hybrids. In addition, the automaker is launching enhanced event data recorders for its American lineup as well.

Also getting a boost for 2011 is the scope of Toyota’s SMART Process vehicle-evaluation system, which sends Toyota experts into the field to get a better handle on what real-world concerns customers are actually experiencing with their vehicles. The system already has evaluated some 4,200 vehicles—without finding a single case in which a product’s electronic throttle control system would lead to unintended acceleration. Beginning this year, the successful SMART approach also will be used to analyze issues beyond unintended acceleration.

Other important Toyota quality measures include:

  • Increasing the reach of its new North American Center for Quality Excellence, which offers Toyota employees and key suppliers enhanced training in quality control.
  • Improving its supplier relationships to leverage their expertise for increased quality throughout the supply chain.
  • Upping levels of reliability testing for key vehicle parts.

“Toyota has made significant progress in recent months to help ensure that our customers can have complete confidence in the quality, safety and reliability of their vehicles, and our latest initiatives build on those accomplishments,” said Steve St. Angelo, chairman of Toyota’s independent North American Quality Advisory Panel. “Our goal is to set new, even higher standards for quality assurance and customer responsiveness in both the factory and the market by continuing to put our customers first in everything that we do.”
