This weekend at the 39th annual 24 Hours of Nurburgring, Toyota will show off the second edition of Toyota’s sports hybrid all-wheel-drive MR2 concept. Toyota unveiled the first edition at the 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon.

The GRMN Sports Hybrid Concept II features a 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to an electric motor, which combined produces 295 horsepower. Although there are no plans for this concept to reach production, if could provide a few hints as to what a potential MR2 successor will look like.

In addition to ample power, the concept weighs under 3,300 pounds, which is light considering it’s packing two engines and a battery pack. The concept also boasts all-wheel drive and a near-perfect weight balance thanks to the amidships engine configuration.

And, in case you were curious, “GRMN” stands for “Gazoo Racing tuned by Meister of Nurburgring,” which alludes to the involvement of Gazoo Racing, a Japanese tuning shop that has worked closely with Toyota in the past on concepts and race vehicles.

Toyota Announces First 25 Winners In “100 Cars For Good” Program

Toyota launched its 100 Cars for Good program as a way to help nonprofit organizations. The program gives Toyota’s Facebook fans the chance to determine which 100 nonprofits will receive a new Toyota vehicle over the course of 100 days. The program ends on August 16.

At this time, the first 25 nonprofit organizations have been selected by the public to receive a new Toyota vehicle. Each organization will use the new vehicle to do “good” in their local communities. The remaining finalists will each receive a $1000 grant from Toyota.

Toyota to Boost North American Production Earlier Than Expected

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. (TEMA) will boost production earlier than expected following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Beginning in June, overall North American production will reach approximately 70 percent of normal levels, up from approximately 30 percent in May.

The improvement in parts availability from Japan is the result of countermeasure activities implemented by affected suppliers. Toyota will continue to evaluate production model-by-model on a monthly basis, with a goal to return to fully normalized production by late this year.

Models returning to 100 percent production in June are Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Matrix, Sequoia, Sienna and Venza.

“Our team members and suppliers are working closely on countermeasure activities to improve the parts condition from Japan. We continue to develop solutions in order to restore 100 percent production as soon as possible for all of our North American-made vehicles,” said Steve St. Angelo, executive vice president of TEMA. “We appreciate the patience of our customers and dealers.”

Toyota Prius Hacked Into Energy-Generating Roller Coaster

Prius cars utilize regenerative breaking to harvest energy and recharge the battery… and that’s true when they’re used as roller coasters. A team of makers decided that they wanted to see what else a Prius could become, and so transformed it into a roller coaster car that gathers energy while breaking at the bottom of the hill.

Ideas for Good: Building a Hybrid Roller Coaster

A while ago, Toyota launched an “Ideas for Good” contest to gather really smart concepts for everything from more eco-friendly vehicles to disaster relief. Basically, Toyota said, “Hey, we have this cool car with tons of interesting parts…what else can you make it into that is useful and helpful to people?”

It’s a rather expensive way to get a prototype rolling, but if it inspires something bigger, then it’s a plus. NotCot reports, “Toyota teamed up with our favorite engineering crew Deeplocal to build a roller coaster from a 2011 Prius. The team of 5 gutted a Prius, using the engine, wiring harness, batteries, and Hybrid Synergy Drive system in a custom designed and fabricated coaster car… and a 70 foot coaster track out of steel.”

The cart can reach a speed of 15 mph when dropping down the platform, and get as much as 6,000 watts from a single run. That’s pretty amazing! The lights you see in the video above are all powered by the cart itself.

One of the biggest introductions at the 2011 New York Auto Show would undoubtedly have to be the Scion FR-S Concept sports coupe. The concept will serve as the inspiration for a production model that will come to the Scion lineup next year.

The FR-S Concept — which stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport — is Scion’s definition of an authentic rear-wheel-drive sports car. Although it’s intended to deliver style and exhilarating performance, it’s also aimed at being surprisingly flexible and fuel efficient.

“Scion is always experimenting with new things,” said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. “The brand is iconic with the xB, adrenalized by the tC, and groundbreaking with the iQ. The FR-S will expand the brand into yet another new dimension that I know it is truly destined for.”

Although it has all the attitude of a Scion, the FR-S Concept also pays homage to Toyota’s roots. The sports coupe is most inspired by the AE86 generation of the Corolla, better known as the Hachi-Roku, meaning “8-6” in Japanese. The car’s overall profile is also inspired by the Toyota 2000GT. Thanks to its flat 2.0-liter boxer engine and rear-wheel drive configuration, the FR-S Concept is also well-balances with a very low center of gravity.

Under the hood, the naturally-aspirated boxer engine also features Toyota’s D4-S injection system, which utilizes both direct and port injection, resulting in increased horsepower and torque throughout the entire powerband, without sacrificing MPG.

“Akio Toyoda has mentioned that he is going to bring the fun-to-drive spirit back to Toyota,” Hollis said. “I know that the Scion FR-S Concept is one of the ways that he plans to accomplish that.”

Toyota Announces Priority Registration Web Site for All-New Prius Plug-In Hybrid

TORRANCE, Calif., April 19, 2011 – - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced the introduction of a new Online Order System that will launch later this year for the all-new Prius Plug-in Hybrid, the most advanced Prius yet.

The first phase of the Online Order System, called Priority Registration, will launch on Earth Day, April 22, 2011. Customers who are interested in being one of the first to own a Prius Plug-in can log on to www.toyota.com/plugin and complete their registration on the site. Toyota’s Priority Registration allows the customer first access to the Online Order System when it becomes available later in the year.

The new Online Order System will allow customers the convenience of configuring their own vehicle from any web browser, select their dealership of choice (within 15 launch states), and track their order through production, distribution and delivery.

“The Prius Plug-in Online Ordering system was inspired by the success and positive customer feedback we had to similar online ordering systems for the first two generations of Prius,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager. “We feel the Prius Plug-in target customer will expect a purchase experience that is as advanced and convenient as the product itself. The Online Ordering System is designed to meet those expectations.”

The Prius Plug-in will begin arriving at Toyota dealers in 15 launch states in spring 2012, with a nationwide roll-out the following year. The 15 launch states include the following: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii*, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.

*Prius Plug-in online ordering will not be available in Hawaii.

Microsoft & Toyota Announce Partnership on Next-Generation Telematics

Microsoft Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. (TMC) today announced they have forged a strategic partnership and plan to build a global platform for TMC’s next-generation telematics services using the Windows Azure platform. Telematics is the fusing of telecommunications and information technologies in vehicles; it can encompass GPS systems, energy management and other multimedia technologies.

As part of the partnership, the two companies plan to participate in a 1 billion yen (approximately $12 million) investment in Toyota Media Service Co., a TMC subsidiary that offers digital information services to Toyota automotive customers. The two companies aim to help develop and deploy telematics applications on the Windows Azure platform, which includes Windows Azure and Microsoft SQL Azure, starting with TMC’s electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2012. TMC’s goal is to establish a complete global cloud platform by 2015 that will provide affordable and advanced telematics services to Toyota automotive customers around the world.

As part of its smart-grid activities, aimed at achieving a low-carbon society through efficient energy use, TMC is conducting trials in Japan of its Toyota Smart Center pilot program, which plans to link people, automobiles and homes for integrated control of energy consumption. TMC believes that, as electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles become more popular, such systems will rely more on telematics services for achieving efficient energy management.

Microsoft has a long history of delivering platforms and services to the automotive market, including in-car infotainment systems built on the Windows Embedded Automotive platform, in-car mapping services with Bing and the Microsoft Tellme voice application, and many other consumer solutions.

“Today’s announcement of our partnership with TMC is a great example of how we continue to invest in the automotive industry and of our commitment to power the services that are important to consumers,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “It further validates the power of the cloud, as the Windows Azure platform will provide the enterprise-grade, scalable platform that TMC needs to deliver telematics in its automobiles worldwide.”

Toyota Sells One Millionth Prius Hybrid In U.S.

Toyota has become synonymous with hybrid technology largely due to the Prius hybrid. Released in the United States 11 years ago, the Prius quickly became the most popular hybrid here, as well as abroad. The overwhelming popularity of the hybrid also helped it achieve a major milestone this week as Toyota has officially sold more than one million Prius hybrids in the U.S.

Worldwide, Toyota has sold more than 3 million Prius hybrids. The release of the third-generation model has only fueled demand, and it currently resides at the top of the EPA’s list of the Most Fuel Efficient Vehicles for 2011.

“Since the Prius went on sale eleven years ago not a year has gone by when it hasn’t been the number one selling hybrid vehicle in the U.S,” said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager. “Prius has become synonymous with the word hybrid and as we see fuel prices starting to rise again, it has accounted for more than 60 percent of hybrid passenger car sales so far this year.”
