2027 Toyota Crown: What's Changing, Release Date and Pricing for New York Drivers
Published September 4, 2026 · Last updated September 4, 2026

The Crown is the odd one out in Toyota's lineup, and that is the point: a full-size hybrid that rides higher than a sedan, carries all-wheel drive on every version, and still fits a spot a three-row SUV would circle the block for. For 2027 it gets more than a new color chart.
What's changing on the 2027 Toyota Crown?
The headline is under the hood. The XLE, Nightshade and Limited move to the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System, THS 5. It still pairs a 2.5-liter four with two electric motors and electronic on-demand all-wheel drive, and combined output stays 236 horsepower, but the torque delivery is reworked. Those three grades also gain paddle shifters, which answers the most common complaint about the outgoing car.
Outside, the changes are the kind you notice only in a side-by-side: a newly sculpted rear bumper, satin-finish hybrid and all-wheel-drive badging, and a new black paint called Inked joining Oxygen White, Bronze Age, Heavy Metal, Finish Line Red and Storm Cloud. Two-tone cars get a body-color trunk lid under a black roof.

Grade by grade: the Nightshade adds black badge overlays to its darkened wheels, caps and handles. The Platinum picks up red calipers and a black window surround while keeping what makes it the driver's Crown — Adaptive Variable Suspension, dynamic rear steering, Active Cornering Assist. The Limited is where the value math changed most.

How this compares with the last update
Perspective helps. The Crown arrived for 2023 as the Avalon's replacement and has barely moved since: 2025 brought the Nightshade Edition and some added equipment, and 2026 was a straight carryover at unchanged prices. That makes 2027 the first mechanical change in four years — a mid-cycle refresh, not a redesign. Body, cabin, twin 12.3-inch displays and 15.2 cubic feet of trunk all carry forward.
When is the 2027 Toyota Crown release date?
Release timing at a glance
- Announced: July 23, 2026, with the complete U.S. grade walk and MSRPs.
- On sale: Toyota has said later in 2026 without naming a day. The trade press reads that as fall arrivals at dealers.
- Built in: Japan, at the Tsutsumi plant, which is why allocation usually sets your delivery date.
- Order of arrival: volume grades ship first; the Platinum tends to trail the lineup.
- What to do now: tell us the grade, color and interior you want and we will flag the first matching allocation. No deposit, no obligation.
One timing note: the weeks a new model year is announced are usually the best weeks to buy the outgoing one. Incentives on remaining 2026 stock often outrun what the 2027 adds. Our lease specials, refreshed monthly, and current manufacturer incentives will tell you quickly which way that math points.
Will the 2027 Toyota Crown cost more?
Yes, but far less than one headline number suggests. Three of four grades rise exactly $200: XLE $41,640, Nightshade $48,965, Platinum $55,190, before Toyota's $1,295 delivery, processing and handling fee. Add it and the range runs $42,935 to $56,485.
Then the Limited, which reads as a $3,770 jump to $49,720 — real on paper, almost nothing in practice. It absorbs the former Advanced Technology Package as standard, and that package cost about $3,570 by itself last year, so a like-for-like Limited is up the same $200. One more line to budget: the delivery fee rose from $1,135 to $1,295.
| Grade | 2026 MSRP | 2027 MSRP | Change | What accounts for it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XLE | $41,440 | $41,640 | +$200 | THS 5 hybrid and paddle shifters |
| Nightshade | $48,765 | $48,965 | +$200 | THS 5, paddle shifters, black badges |
| Limited | $45,950 | $49,720 | +$3,770 | Former $3,570 tech package now standard; net $200 |
| Platinum | $54,990 | $55,190 | +$200 | Hybrid MAX unchanged; red calipers |
Every 2027 Crown grade, compared
All four are all-wheel drive and seat five. The split that matters is which hybrid you are buying.
| Grade | Powertrain | MSRP | MPG city / hwy / comb. | Notable standard equipment | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| THS 5 hybrid — 2.5L, 236 hp combined, e-CVT, electronic on-demand AWD | |||||
| XLE | 2.5L THS 5 | $41,640 | 42 / 38 / 40 | 19-inch wheels, leather trim, heated and ventilated fronts, heated rear seats, heated wheel, twin 12.3-inch displays, six speakers, paddle shifters | Value pick; best ride on city pavement |
| Nightshade | 2.5L THS 5 | $48,965 | 42 / 38 / 40 | 21-inch matte-black wheels, blacked-out badges, caps and handles, panoramic roof, 11-speaker JBL audio | The look, sorted at the factory |
| Limited | 2.5L THS 5 | $49,720 | 42 / 38 / 40 | 21-inch wheels, Panoramic View Monitor, Traffic Jam Assist, Digital Key, Lane Change Assist, Front Cross-Traffic Alert, panoramic roof, JBL audio | The tech grade, most improved for 2027 |
| Hybrid MAX — 2.4L turbo, 340 hp / 400 lb-ft, 6-speed automatic, full-time electronic AWD | |||||
| Platinum | 2.4L turbo Hybrid MAX | $55,190 | 29 / 32 / 30 (2026 EPA) | Adaptive Variable Suspension, dynamic rear steering, red calipers, head-up display, hands-free power trunk | A fast car that happens to be a hybrid: 5.7 seconds to 60 against 7.6 |
Two things the table cannot show. The all-wheel-drive systems differ: THS 5 grades use a rear motor that engages on demand and can send up to 80 percent of drive rearward on slip, while the Platinum runs full-time electronic AWD. So does the suspension — only the Platinum gets the adaptive setup.

Inside: two big screens and a very quiet cabin
Every 2027 Crown gets leather-trimmed seating, a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two-phone Bluetooth and over-the-air updates. Heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated wheel, dual-zone climate and wireless charging are standard from the XLE up.

Audio splits cleanly: six speakers on the XLE, an 11-speaker JBL Premium system with rear subwoofer on the rest. Nightshade, Limited and Platinum also carry a fixed panoramic roof, which does more for the back seat than the spec line suggests: the roofline drops sharply, and the glass keeps it from feeling low.

The details prove themselves after one winter. Heated rear seats stop being a gimmick when you are running two people to Kennedy at six in the morning in February, and the Platinum's hands-free trunk is the difference between setting groceries on a wet sidewalk and not.

Safety, awards and the warranty behind them
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on all four grades: pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, full-speed adaptive cruise, lane departure alert with steering assist, road sign recognition and automatic high beams. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and parking assist with automatic braking are standard too.
The record backs it up. The IIHS named the Crown a Top Safety Pick+ at launch, its highest designation; NHTSA gives it five stars overall; and Kelley Blue Book has included it in its safest-hybrid-cars roundup. Coverage runs 36 months/36,000 miles basic, 60 months/60,000 miles powertrain, hybrid components 8 years/100,000 miles and the hybrid battery 10 years/150,000 miles, transferable to the next owner.
Why the Crown works on New York streets
Start with what you get without ticking a box: all-wheel drive on every grade. No front-drive base model, no upcharge, no hunting for the one AWD car on the lot. From the first cold snap to the last slush in March, that is the feature that matters here, and it is why plenty of Crown shoppers started out as SUV shoppers.
Then geometry. The Crown is roughly sixteen feet long and just over five feet tall. The height is the quiet advantage: posted clearance limits in older garages routinely rule out a three-row SUV, and the Crown clears them. The ride height also means you are not scraping a front lip on a driveway apron, a speed cushion or a parking block.

The parking and traffic tech earns its keep here more than almost anywhere. Advanced Park will parallel park hands-free, and the Panoramic View Monitor standard on Limited and Platinum makes a tight garage column survivable. Traffic Jam Assist handles the crawl at 25 mph and under, which describes the Belt, the BQE and the LIE for much of most days. Digital Key lets a phone open and start the car; it and Traffic Jam Assist need an active Toyota subscription or trial.
Efficiency lands where you actually drive: 42 mpg city on the THS 5 grades, with a 14.5-gallon tank putting range near 580 miles. One caveat — the 21-inch wheels ride firmer over broken pavement than the XLE's 19s, so if your streets have not been repaved this decade, drive both.
