2027 Toyota Tacoma: What's Changing, Release Date and Pricing for NYC Drivers

Published · Last updated

Walk past any renovation in Queens or a storefront build-out in the Bronx and there is usually a pickup at the curb. In this city the truck that earns its keep is the one that also fits: in a metered spot, beside a double-parked van, under a garage beam. That is the Tacoma's argument, and for 2027 Toyota is keeping it almost word for word.

What Toyota has confirmed so far. Toyota has confirmed one 2027 Tacoma change so far: a new Honeycomb paint for the TRD Pro, announced July 28, 2026. Everything else below is the current 2026 specification, and we refresh this page when Toyota publishes the rest.

What's changing on the 2027 Toyota Tacoma?

Very little, and on a truck this young that is good news. The 2027 model is the fourth year of the generation that launched for 2024, and reviews published through mid-2026, Edmunds and Autoblog among them, describe it as a carryover: the same 2.4-liter turbo four in gas and i-FORCE MAX hybrid form, XtraCab and Double Cab bodies, five- and six-foot beds, and eight grades from SR to TRD Pro.

Industry talk runs slightly ahead. Automotive News pegged the Tacoma for a mid-cycle refresh on Toyota's usual truck rhythm, while newer previews expect any restyle to slip to 2028. Until Toyota says otherwise, plan on today's truck with a new window sticker.

The confirmed change: Honeycomb for the TRD Pro

On July 28 Toyota gave the Tacoma, Tundra and Sequoia TRD Pro a golden-yellow color called Honeycomb, replacing 2026's Wave Maker as the flagship paint. The release also confirmed that IsoDynamic front seats, which use a suspended mechanism to calm head toss off-road, stay available on the Tacoma. The new FOX QS3 shocks apply to Tundra and Sequoia only, as our 2027 Sequoia TRD Pro and Trailhunter guide explains.

When is the 2027 Toyota Tacoma release date?

2027 Tacoma timing: confirmed and expected

  • Announced so far: the TRD Pro Honeycomb color, on July 28, 2026. Grades, equipment and pricing are not yet public.
  • Precedent: Toyota detailed the 2026 Tacoma on November 13, 2025; trucks reached dealers over the winter, with the Wave Maker TRD Pro scheduled for March 2026.
  • Expected: full 2027 details in late fall 2026 and first trucks around the turn of the year. That is an industry estimate, not a Toyota date.
  • TRD Pro timing: special-color TRD Pro trucks have trailed the core lineup, so Honeycomb builds may land in spring 2027.
  • Next step: tell us cab, bed, grade and powertrain, and we will flag the first matching allocation. No deposit, no obligation.

If your truck is a work tool, the calendar matters more than the paint. A 2026 bought in changeover season is mechanically the same pickup, and the outgoing year often carries the stronger factory support. Check our monthly lease specials and current manufacturer incentives before you decide to wait.

Will the 2027 Toyota Tacoma cost more?

Probably, by a modest amount. The 2026 SR launched at $32,145 in November 2025, and mid-year adjustments have since taken it to $32,545. The TRD Pro now tops the range at $64,750. Both figures exclude a $1,745 delivery, processing and handling charge.

Industry estimates put a 2027 SR around $33,400, in line with Toyota's habit of adding a few hundred dollars per grade each year. The first truck of this generation started at $31,500 for 2024, so three model years have added roughly a thousand dollars at the entry point, while resale values, which set lease payments, have stayed class-leading.

Two numbers in that table matter most to work buyers. The hybrid is not a fuel-economy play: a TRD Sport i-FORCE MAX rates 22/24 mpg against 20/24 for the gas truck, on a sticker $6,920 higher, partly because every hybrid is 4x4. What that money buys is 148 more lb-ft of torque and 2,400 watts of onboard power. And the best tow ratings belong to gas trucks, with 6,500 pounds on a properly equipped XtraCab and 6,400 on a Double Cab.

A work truck sized for New York job sites

A full-size pickup is the default on a big commercial site, but most trades in this city work somewhere tighter: a brownstone gut in Harlem, a bathroom in a Riverdale co-op, a restaurant fit-out in Jackson Heights with one loading zone for the whole block. The Tacoma carries about 1,700 pounds of payload, tows up to 6,500 and still slips between a delivery van and a bike lane.

The XtraCab is the trades configuration. It seats two and swaps the old jump seats for storage space behind them, so meters and hand tools ride out of sight. It also brings the six-foot bed and the highest tow rating, and for 2026 the SR XtraCab gets a hitch as standard. Sheet goods still ride on the wheel wells, as in any midsize bed, so a rack pays for itself quickly.

On every i-FORCE MAX truck, 2,400 watts of 120-volt power sits in the cab and the bed. That runs a miter saw, tops up batteries between tasks and, when a storm takes the block's power out, can keep a refrigerator or sump pump going. Registration is the last decision: commercial plates open commercial loading zones but keep a truck off the parkways and off residential streets overnight, and passenger plates reverse that trade. Settle it with the DMV and your accountant before you buy.

Saturday is the other shift: the same hitch pulls a jet-ski trailer out to Long Island, and the tailgate carries bikes up to Bear Mountain.

Inside the cab: screens, storage and seats

Lower grades pair a 7-inch driver display with an 8-inch touchscreen; higher trims move to a 12.3-inch cluster and a 14-inch screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and physical knobs for climate and audio still work with gloves on.

The console suits long days, with cupholders, an easy-reach gear selector and storage under the armrest, while the cluster shows speed, fuel and, on hybrids, energy flow at a glance.

On JBL-equipped trucks, a portable Bluetooth speaker docks in the dash and comes out to the tailgate or the job site. Available Blind Spot Monitor lights up in the side mirrors, which earns its keep in lanes shared with cyclists and delivery vans.

In the Double Cab, the rear seatbacks fold down to turn the back of the cab into dry, lockable cargo space, and upholstery runs from hard-wearing fabric on work grades to leather on the Limited.

How it compares with the last restyle

2023 Toyota Tacoma, the final model year of the third-generation truck before the 2024 redesign

The last full redesign arrived for 2024, replacing the 2016 to 2023 truck pictured above, and the step up was a big one. The 3.5-liter V6 and 2.7-liter four gave way to a single 2.4-liter turbo four: 278 horsepower like the old V6, but 317 lb-ft of torque against 265, and up to 465 in the hybrid. Most grades swapped rear leaf springs for coils on the TNGA-F frame, so the truck rides far better unloaded.

Two trade-offs are worth knowing. Maximum towing slipped from 6,800 pounds on the old V6 to 6,500, and the XtraCab dropped the old Access Cab's rear jump seats. Since then the changes have been small: front tow hooks and higher-amp auxiliary switches for 2025, black TRD badges, new colors and the SR XtraCab hitch for 2026.

The TRD Pro suspension, then and now

The TRD Pro shows how far the hardware moved. The 2023 version ran FOX 2.5-inch internal-bypass shocks with a fixed tune and leaf springs out back. The current truck keeps the 2.5-inch FOX internal-bypass design but adds Quick Switch 3: a dial at the base of each shock sets compression damping in three positions by hand, no tools needed.

Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro FOX QS3 internal-bypass shocks and off-road suspension

Internal bypass means the shock stays compliant through the middle of its travel and firms up near the ends, so small bumps stay soft while big hits do not bottom out. Rear remote reservoirs keep the oil cool on long rough stretches, FOX hydraulic bump stops cushion full compression, and coil springs replace the old leaves. For a truck that commutes on the Cross Bronx during the week and runs sandy Pine Barrens roads on weekends, that range is the point.

Awards, safety and what the ratings say

Kelley Blue Book named the Tacoma its 2026 Best Buy among midsize trucks, a sixth straight win, and U.S. News gave it the 2026 Best Midsize Pickup Truck for the Money award. Toyota was also the most-awarded brand at the 2026 KBB Best Buy Awards, with RAV4, Camry and Sienna wins.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on every grade. The redesigned truck earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick in 2024; under the stricter 2026 criteria the Double Cab rated Marginal in the updated moderate overlap test, which now weighs rear-seat protection, and IIHS gave no small pickup an award this year. Coverage runs 3 years or 36,000 miles basic, 5 years or 60,000 miles powertrain, 10 years or 150,000 miles on the hybrid battery, plus ToyotaCare maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 miles.

Why the Tacoma makes sense for New York drivers

Size comes first. A Double Cab short-bed Tacoma is about a foot and a half shorter than a full-size crew cab, so it fits more metered spaces, turns around on narrow side streets and gets into more garages. On a lifted Trailhunter or TRD Pro, or once a rack goes on, check the posted clearance before you commit.

Living with one here adds more reasons. The hybrid's 465 lb-ft is the most torque in the class, welcome when merging onto the Van Wyck with a loaded bed. Four-wheel drive and a locking rear differential on TRD grades handle the unplowed block in February, and real ground clearance shrugs off potholes that bend wheels on lower cars. Safety tech is standard, a manual is still offered, and resale protects you whether you finance or lease.

Want a roof instead of a bed? The Toyota 4Runner shares the platform and much of the hardware, and our 2027 4Runner guide and 2027 Land Cruiser guide cover both. For a lighter daily commute, the RAV4 Hybrid covers city driving on far less fuel.

Compare trucks and SUVs from five brands on one block

Plaza Toyota is part of Plaza Auto Mall, family-owned on Nostrand Avenue since 1975. Five new-vehicle franchises, each with its own certified pre-owned program, sit beside a multibrand used department: more than 1,000 vehicles in stock, all within a seven-minute walk.

For a truck shopper, that means a real comparison in one visit. Drive the Tacoma, then walk to the Honda Ridgeline for a unibody take on the midsize pickup with a lockable in-bed trunk. If the bed turns out to be optional, the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade and Honda Passport are steps away, Acura of Brooklyn covers premium, and used pickups from other brands show up in the group used inventory.

Frequently asked questions

Has Toyota announced 2027 Tacoma pricing?
Not yet. Current 2026 pricing runs from $32,545 for the SR to $64,750 for the TRD Pro, before the $1,745 delivery, processing and handling charge. Industry estimates put a 2027 SR near $33,400.
When will the 2027 Tacoma arrive at dealerships?
Toyota has not set a date. The 2026 truck was detailed in November 2025 and arrived over the winter, so expectations point to late 2026 or early 2027, with Honeycomb TRD Pro trucks likely later.
Is the 2027 Toyota Tacoma a redesign?
No. It is the fourth model year of the generation launched for 2024. Industry reporting expects a carryover, and any mid-cycle refresh now looks more likely for the 2028 model year.
What is new on the 2027 Tacoma TRD Pro?
A golden-yellow Honeycomb paint, confirmed by Toyota on July 28, 2026, with IsoDynamic front seats still available. The new FOX QS3 shocks in the same announcement apply to the Tundra and Sequoia, not the Tacoma.
How much can a Toyota Tacoma tow and carry?
Up to 6,500 pounds on a properly equipped gas XtraCab, 6,400 on a gas Double Cab and 6,000 with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid. Maximum payload is about 1,700 pounds, depending on configuration.
Is the i-FORCE MAX hybrid worth it for work?
If you run tools, often yes. It adds 148 lb-ft of torque over the gas engine and 2,400 watts of 120-volt outlets in the cab and bed. Buy it for torque and onboard power, not fuel savings.
Which Tacoma makes the most sense for a New York contractor?
The SR5 XtraCab is the value pick, with 278 hp, a six-foot bed, the top tow rating and storage behind the seats. Crews that power tools on site and need five seats should look at the TRD Sport i-FORCE MAX.
Can you still buy a Toyota Tacoma with a manual transmission?
For 2026, yes. A six-speed manual is offered on select four-wheel-drive SR, TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road trucks. Toyota has not yet confirmed the 2027 transmission lineup.
Can I reserve a 2027 Tacoma at Plaza Toyota before it arrives?
Yes. Tell us the cab, bed, grade, powertrain and color you want and we will match you to the first arriving allocation, with no deposit and no obligation.
I live in Queens, Staten Island or on Long Island. Does buying from Plaza Toyota still work?
Yes. Purchased vehicles are delivered free within 25 miles, and service pickup and drop-off covers the entire NYC metro area. Our team speaks more than fifteen languages.
What is Plaza Auto Mall?
The family-owned group Plaza Toyota belongs to, on Nostrand Avenue since 1975. It sells new and certified pre-owned Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Acura vehicles, with more than 1,000 in stock within a seven-minute walk.
Does Plaza Auto Mall sell used trucks from other brands?
Yes. The multibrand used department stocks makes we do not sell new, so a used Ford, Chevrolet or Nissan pickup can be compared on the same block as a certified Tacoma. Browse the full Plaza Auto Mall used inventory.
