Toyota Corolla vs Camry: Which Toyota Sedan Should You Buy?

Published October 30, 2026 · Last updated October 30, 2026

Pick the Corolla if you want the lowest price and the easiest car to park; pick the Camry if adults ride in back or you want more power and a quieter, roomier cabin. The 2027 Corolla starts at $23,325 and the Corolla Hybrid at $25,175, while the 2027 Camry, now sold only as a hybrid, starts at $29,700. Hybrid against hybrid, the gap is $4,525. For that money the Camry adds 11.0 inches of length, 3.2 inches of rear legroom, 2.0 cubic feet of trunk space and 225 horsepower against 138, yet the two hybrids are rated within 1 mpg of each other. Toyota Camry vs Corolla is really a question of how often your back seat is full.

Quick Verdict

Corolla or Camry: The Short Answer

  • Choose the Corolla for a commuter car that is cheap to buy and run: from $23,325, 11 inches shorter for street parking, the best reliability score in its class at RepairPal and up to 50 mpg as a hybrid.
  • Choose the Camry for a family sedan: 38.0 inches of rear legroom, a 15.1-cubic-foot trunk, 225 to 232 hp, all-wheel drive on every grade and a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+.
  • Best fuel economy: a near tie. The Camry LE is rated 51 mpg combined and the Corolla Hybrid LE 50.
  • Our take: the Corolla Hybrid is the smarter buy for one or two people; the Camry earns its higher price once you regularly carry passengers.

Model years: both are 2027 models. Toyota priced the Corolla in its August 18, 2026 release and the Camry in its October 13, 2026 release. Prices exclude destination: $1,295 on the Corolla; Toyota had not published the 2027 Camry figure as of October 30, 2026. Is the Camry Bigger Than the Corolla?

Yes. The Camry is 11.0 inches longer, 2.3 inches wider and rides on a 4.9-inch longer wheelbase; height and ground clearance are within half an inch. On a Park Slope block or in a tight Downtown Brooklyn garage, those 11 inches decide whether a spot works, and the Corolla's shorter overhangs make it the easier car to live with on the street.

Inside, the extra wheelbase goes to the back seat. Front legroom is almost identical at 42.0 and 42.1 inches, but the Camry gives rear passengers 38.0 inches of legroom against 34.8, 4.0 more inches of shoulder room and half an inch more headroom. Edmunds praises the Corolla's rear legroom but lists its rear headroom as a weakness, and calls the Camry roomy in both rows (Corolla review, Camry review). Three adults across the back is realistic in the Camry; in the Corolla it is a short-trip arrangement.

Which Has the Bigger Trunk?

The Camry, by 2.0 cubic feet: 15.1 against 13.1. Every Camry is a hybrid, so there is one trunk size, and the Corolla Hybrid keeps the same 13.1 cubic feet as the gas Corolla. The Camry's extra space fits a folded stroller or a second large suitcase on a run to JFK.

Which Is Faster, the Corolla or the Camry?

The Camry. Its 2.5-liter hybrid makes 225 net horsepower with front-wheel drive and 232 with all-wheel drive, and Car and Driver timed a 2026 Camry Nightshade at 7.0 seconds to 60 mph and a 2025 XSE AWD at 6.8 (via 0-60 Specs). The Corolla's 2.0-liter gas engine makes 169 hp and 151 lb-ft through a CVT with a launch gear; the Corolla Hybrid's 1.8-liter system makes 138 hp. Car and Driver measured a 2020 Corolla XSE at 8.0 seconds and a 2023 Corolla Hybrid SE at 9.0 (0-60 Specs).

All-wheel drive is the other split. Every Camry grade offers Electronic On-Demand AWD for $1,525; on the Corolla it exists only on the Hybrid LE and Hybrid SE, for $1,400. Camry SE, Nightshade and XSE grades get a sport-tuned suspension, and the Corolla XSE adds paddle shifters with 10 preset ratios. Merging onto the Belt Parkway with four aboard, you will feel the Camry's 87-hp advantage over the Corolla Hybrid.

Which Gets Better Gas Mileage?

Hybrid against hybrid, they are tied for practical purposes, and both run on regular. Toyota estimates the 2027 Camry LE at 51 mpg combined (EPA 2026: 52 city, 49 highway); SE, Nightshade and XLE grades fall to 46, and the XSE with AWD to 43. The Corolla Hybrid LE and XLE are EPA-rated at 53 city, 46 highway and 50 combined (EPA), and the Hybrid LE AWD at 51/44/48 (EPA). The gas Corolla LE is EPA-rated at 31/41/35 (EPA); the SE and XSE are rated 33 combined.

Yearly fuel spend for 12,000 miles of driving, using EPA combined ratings (Toyota's estimate for the 2027 Camry LE), priced at New York's AAA regular-grade average ($4.355, October 30, 2026).
ModelMPG (combined)Gallons per yearYearly cost
Corolla LE (gas)35343$1,493
Corolla Hybrid LE FWD50240$1,045
Corolla Hybrid LE AWD48250$1,089
Camry LE FWD51235$1,025
Camry SE / XLE FWD46261$1,136

The real fuel decision is gas against hybrid, not Corolla against Camry: a Corolla Hybrid saves about $450 a year over the gas Corolla, while the Camry LE and Corolla Hybrid land within $20 of each other.

Which Has Better Tech and Safety?

Both start with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch digital cluster and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 with Blind Spot Monitor. The Corolla moves up to a 10.5-inch screen and a 12.3-inch cluster on the XSE and Hybrid XLE, with JBL audio available. The Camry offers a 12.3-inch screen, a 12.3-inch cluster on XLE and XSE, plus a 10-inch head-up display, nine-speaker JBL audio and a panoramic roof; the Corolla offers a conventional moonroof. Edmunds notes the Camry stays quiet at highway speed, while it calls out the Corolla for road noise (Camry review, Corolla review).

The safety ratings favor the Camry. It is a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good scores in every crash test (Camry ratings). The Corolla earned Good in the small overlap and side tests but Marginal in the updated moderate overlap test, because of how the rear passenger was protected, so it has no award; its headlights rate Good against Acceptable on the Camry. NHTSA gives the 2027 Camry five stars overall with FWD or AWD (search "2027 Toyota Camry" in the NHTSA ratings tool); the Corolla Hybrid FWD also has five stars, while the gas Corolla still awaits its side-impact rating.

Which Lasts Longer and Keeps More of Its Value?

Both rank near the top of their classes, with a small edge to the Corolla. RepairPal rates the Corolla 4.5 out of 5, first of 36 compact cars, at $362 a year in average repairs, and the Camry 4.0, third of 24 midsize cars, at $388. iSeeCars ranks the Camry first among midsize cars with a 7.6 out of 10 score and a 31.4% chance of reaching 200,000 miles; the Corolla scores 7.4 with a 25.3% chance.

The Corolla depreciates more slowly: iSeeCars projects a 28.4% loss over five years against 36.9% for the Camry Hybrid. Coverage is identical apart from roadside help: 3 years or 36,000 miles basic, 5 years or 60,000 miles powertrain, 10 years or 150,000 miles on the hybrid battery, and ToyotaCare maintenance for 1 year or 10,000 miles, with roadside assistance for 2 years on the Corolla and 3 on the Camry (Toyota releases). Buying used? Toyota Certified Gold cars add a 7-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Which Costs Less, Trim for Trim?

The Corolla, at every level. Comparing like with like: Corolla Hybrid LE to Camry LE is a $4,525 gap, Hybrid LE AWD to Camry LE AWD $4,650, Hybrid XLE to Camry XLE $5,360, and the gas XSE to the Camry XSE $7,060. The most expensive regular Corolla grade, the Hybrid XLE at $29,540, still costs less than the cheapest Camry. Grade-by-grade detail is in our 2027 Corolla guide and 2027 Camry guide.
