2027 Toyota GR Corolla: What's Changing, Release Date and Pricing for NYC Drivers
Published September 4, 2026 · Last updated September 4, 2026

A 300-horsepower rally hatch with three pedals and a torque dial on the console is not the obvious car for a city where half your week happens below 25 mph. Spend a weekend with one and the logic flips: it is short, it is all-wheel drive, it swallows a bike with the seats down, and it makes leaving early on a Saturday feel like the point.
What's changing on the 2027 Toyota GR Corolla?
Nothing has been announced, and the silence is worth reading carefully. Toyota has already detailed the 2027 Corolla sedan and the 2027 Corolla Hatchback, both arriving this year with new displays and fresh colors. The GR version appeared in neither announcement, which is normal. Gazoo Racing models run on their own calendar and are usually revealed separately, closer to production.
What did change is where the car comes from. In May 2026 the first British-built GR Corollas reached American dealerships, the result of roughly $56 million spent on a dedicated line at Toyota's Burnaston plant in Derbyshire. That line was set up for about 10,000 cars a year, all of them for North America, on top of what Motomachi in Japan already builds. The practical effect here is straightforward: the long waiting lists that defined the early GR Corolla years are easing.

Industry reporting has been busier than Toyota's press office. Enthusiast outlets spent the past year discussing whether the next generation moves from the 1.6-liter three-cylinder to the larger four-cylinder Gazoo Racing has been developing, with power well north of 300 rumored. Treat that as unconfirmed: a change that size arrives with a full generation, not a model-year rollover. The one confirmed 2026 headline is the GRMN Corolla, a hand-built 730-unit track special at $64,360 before destination. Not a trim you order, but a fair signal of how seriously Toyota still takes this platform.
When is the 2027 Toyota GR Corolla release date?
Release timing at a glance
- Announced: not yet. Toyota has released 2027 details for the Corolla sedan and hatchback, but not for the GR.
- Precedent: the 2025 update was detailed in August 2024 and the 2026 car was shown in September 2025. Both went on sale that autumn.
- Expected arrival: late 2026 into early 2027, on the same rhythm.
- Built where: Burnaston, England for North American supply, alongside Motomachi in Japan.
- How allocation moves: manual cars in the popular colors go first. Automatics and Premium Plus builds are easier to place.
- What to do now: give us grade, transmission and color and we will flag the first matching allocation. No deposit, no obligation.
One pattern holds across every nameplate: the weeks around a changeover are frequently the best weeks to buy the outgoing car, because support on remaining stock often beats whatever launches next. Our lease specials and manufacturer incentives show where that stands this month.
Will the 2027 Toyota GR Corolla cost more?
Expect a modest increase. When Toyota simplified the range for 2026 and retired the entry Core grade, the effective starting price rose by roughly $1,060, and the car now opens at $39,920 before the $1,195 delivery charge. Nothing for 2027 has been priced, and a carryover year on a two-grade lineup rarely produces a dramatic jump.
What deserves more attention than MSRP is running cost here. It wants premium fuel, returns 24 mpg combined with the manual, and insurance on a 300-horsepower all-wheel-drive hatch is a different conversation than a Corolla LE. Budget honestly and the sticker stops being the interesting part: this is the last all-wheel-drive hot hatch under $50,000 with a manual gearbox, and nothing obvious replaces it.
How the 2027 GR Corolla trims compare
Toyota has not published a 2027 lineup, so the table below is the 2026 range: what you can order and drive today, and the closest guide to what carries over. The Core and Premium grades in the second section were 2025 only and are no longer built.
| Grade | Transmission | Drive | MPG city / hwy / comb. | Base MSRP (2026) | Notable equipment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 lineup — 1.6L turbo three-cylinder, 300 hp / 295 lb-ft, GR-FOUR all-wheel drive standard | |||||
| GR Corolla | 6-speed manual | AWD | 21 / 28 / 24 | $39,920 | Front and rear Torsen limited-slip diffs, triple exhaust, rev matching, 18-inch alloys, Michelin Pilot Sport tires |
| GR Corolla | 8-speed GR-DAT automatic | AWD | 19 / 27 / 22 | $41,920 | Adds paddle shifters, launch control, transmission fluid cooler |
| Premium Plus | 6-speed manual | AWD | 21 / 28 / 24 | $45,965 | Forged carbon roof, vented hood, sub-radiator, matte black wheels, heated seats and wheel, JBL audio with subwoofer |
| Premium Plus | 8-speed GR-DAT automatic | AWD | 19 / 27 / 22 | $47,965 | Premium Plus equipment plus paddles, launch control, fluid cooler |
| 2025 model year only — retired when the range was simplified for 2026 | |||||
| Core | Manual or automatic | AWD | 21 / 28 / 24 (MT) | Not offered for 2026 | Former entry grade; dropping it raised the range's starting price about $1,060 |
| Premium | Manual or automatic | AWD | 21 / 28 / 24 (MT) | Not offered for 2026 | Mid grade, suede-trimmed heated seats, optional sub-radiator |
| Limited halo model — 2026 GRMN Corolla, 730 cars worldwide, hand-built at Motomachi | |||||
| GRMN Corolla | 6-speed manual only | AWD | Not published | $64,360 | 302 lb-ft, rear seats deleted to save 66 lb, Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, carbon hood, fenders and adjustable wing |
Two lines carry the decision. The base car is the value here by a wide margin: it has the full mechanical package, both Torsen differentials included, and asks $6,045 less than the Premium Plus. The step up is narrower than that gap suggests. Premium Plus adds the sub-radiator, which matters for repeat track sessions and very little on the Cross Bronx, plus the carbon roof, heated seats and the better stereo.
Manual or automatic in New York traffic?
This is the real question, and there is no wrong answer. The six-speed is why most people want this car. Throws are short, rev matching is automatic and switchable, and the gearbox is a large part of what separates a GR Corolla from every crossover in the next lane.

The counterargument is your commute. If most of your driving is the BQE at 6:15 or a daily crawl over a bridge, a clutch pedal stops being charming somewhere in month two. The eight-speed GR-DAT was built for that compromise: Toyota tuned it to read brake and throttle inputs rather than g-force and gave it ratios close to the manual's, so it holds gears the way you would. It adds $2,000, costs two combined mpg, and brings launch control and a fluid cooler.
Our honest split: second or weekend car, take the manual and never think about it again. Only car, five days a week in traffic, drive the automatic before dismissing it. Plenty of people who arrived certain about three pedals leave with paddles. Either way you get the same G16E-GTS: 1.6 liters, three cylinders, 300 horsepower at 6,500 rpm, 295 lb-ft from 3,250 rpm, and GR-FOUR all-wheel drive with Normal, Track and Gravel settings.

How today's car compares with the last major update
The GR Corolla has never had a full generation change, so the reference point is the 2025 update, the largest revision since launch. That year Toyota added the eight-speed GR-DAT alongside the manual, raised torque from 273 to 295 lb-ft to match the retired Morizo Edition, and made front and rear Torsen limited-slip differentials standard rather than an option box.

The chassis work was less visible and arguably more important. Rebound springs went in at both ends to suppress inner wheel lift through hard corners, the rear coils and stabilizers were revised, and the trailing arm mounting point was raised to reduce squat under power. The front bumper was redesigned with larger corner openings, brake ducts and air curtains ahead of the front wheels, feeding the radiator, intercooler and the newly available sub-radiator. Premium Plus arrived the same year with the forged carbon roof and vented hood previously reserved for limited editions.
For 2026 the changes were narrower and pointed the same direction: over 45 feet of extra structural adhesive for rigidity, a secondary air intake, and a JBL system with a subwoofer. Read the pattern as a compliment. This car has been revised every model year of its short life, which is unusual, and a current example is the most sorted version of a design whose weak points have already surfaced.
Inside: a driver's cabin, not a showroom one
The interior is deliberately plain and opinions divide on it. You get physical climate knobs, real switches, a low driving position and heavily bolstered sport seats that hold you through the kind of on-ramp where a normal seat lets you slide. Materials are Corolla-grade in places, which reads as cost saving to some buyers and as money spent on differentials to others.

The practical numbers are better than they need to be. Seating is five, cargo room behind the rear seats is 17.8 cubic feet, and the hatch opening is a real one. Overall length is 173.6 inches, more than two feet shorter than a mid-size three-row SUV and a genuine advantage every time you parallel park on a street sized in 1962. Ground clearance is 5.3 inches, so potholes and steep driveway aprons deserve respect.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard on every 2026 car, with pre-collision braking, full-speed adaptive cruise, lane departure alert and blind spot monitoring. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included. Premium Plus adds heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, which stop being a luxury around the second week of January.
Awards and what reviewers actually say
Kelley Blue Book ranked the GR Corolla second among its Best Hatchbacks with a 4.4 expert rating, praising the driving experience and the practicality of the hatch body while flagging limited availability. U.S. News, after driving the 2026 car at Sonoma, called it one of the best hot hatches ever produced. Edmunds measured a 60-0 mph stop of 107 feet and called it the braking leader in the segment, ahead of lighter rivals.
Kelley Blue Book has also repeatedly named Toyota its Best Resale Value Brand, which shows up on your statement rather than a wall, because resale sets lease residuals and therefore payments. Warranty is 36 months or 36,000 miles basic and 60 months or 60,000 miles powertrain, with ToyotaCare maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles.
Why the GR Corolla makes sense for New York drivers
The honest part first: premium fuel, 24 mpg, a firm ride and some road noise on concrete highway. If you want quiet and cheap, this is not the car, and we will say so across the desk.
Now the case. GR-FOUR is not the marketing kind of all-wheel drive. It sends power where it is needed rather than reacting after a wheel has spun, which is worth real money on a February morning when your side street has not seen a plow. Pair it with proper winter tires and this is one of the most confident small cars you can own here. Size is the second argument: at 173.6 inches long and 72.8 wide it fits garages and street spots a crossover cannot, and the hatch takes a bike with the seats folded or a weekend's luggage for two.
Then there is what it does once you leave. This car was built for the Taconic, the Palisades and the run out to the North Fork, and for a meaningful number of owners here it is a track car that drives itself home. Lime Rock, New Jersey Motorsports Park and Watkins Glen are realistic weekends from the city, and few cars let you commute Friday, run sessions Saturday and drive back Sunday without a trailer.
Cross-shopping? The Honda Civic Type R is the front-drive alternative with a bigger back seat and no all-wheel drive. Want the practicality without the premium fuel bill? Plaza Toyota is part of Plaza Auto Mall, family-owned on Nostrand Avenue since 1975: five new-vehicle brands, a certified pre-owned program for each, and a multibrand used operation covering makes we do not sell new. Over 1,000 vehicles in stock, all within a seven-minute walk.
For a performance shopper that geography does real work. Compare a GR Corolla against a Honda Civic, a Kia K4 hatchback or a Hyundai Elantra in one afternoon, without moving your car or booking three appointments across three boroughs. Need more room after the test drive changes your mind? The Kia Seltos and Hyundai Kona are a few doors down, and Acura of Brooklyn covers the premium side of the block.
